Indonesian Architecture Is Vibrant & Evolving

As an architect, what fascinates you the most?

As an architect, I am most fascinated by the interplay between space, culture, and human experience. The ability to design environments that not only serve functional purposes but also resonate with the cultural and emotional contexts of their inhabitants is deeply inspiring. Each project offers a unique narrative, a story waiting to be told through thoughtful design.

What, according to you, are the first steps towards integrating a vernacular approach into a contemporary design?

Integrating a vernacular approach into contemporary design begins with deep research and understanding of the local context. This involves studying traditional architectural methods, materials, climate and cultural practices. The next step is to thoughtfully adapt these elements to modern needs and technologies, creating a dialogue between the past and the present. It’s about respecting heritage while innovatively addressing today’s challenges.

What is the current status of the Indonesian architecture sector?

The Indonesian architecture sector is vibrant and evolving. There's a growing emphasis on sustainability and environmentally responsive design, driven by the unique challenges and opportunities of our tropical climate. Additionally, there's an increasing appreciation for blending modern architectural practices with indigenous techniques and materials, which reflects our rich cultural diversity. The sector is dynamic, with a promising future shaped by both local and global influences.

What are the learnings you wish to take with you from India?

From India, I wish to take back the profound respect for cultural heritage and the innovative ways in which it is integrated into modern architecture. India’s ability to weave tradition into contemporary spaces while addressing urban and environmental challenges is truly inspiring. The country’s diverse architectural styles and solutions offer valuable insights into creating spaces that are both culturally rich and functionally modern.

How has Charles Correa inspired your architectural journey?

Charles Correa has been a monumental influence on my architectural journey. His work exemplifies how architecture can be deeply rooted in cultural context while pushing the boundaries of design innovation. His commitment to social responsibility and sustainable urban development has significantly influenced my approach to architecture. Being part of the Annual Charles Correa Memorial Lecture organized by Ambuja Neotia is an incredible honour. It’s a platform that celebrates his legacy and fosters meaningful discourse in the architectural community. Sharing and learning in this space is both humbling and exhilarating.
